Despite its brilliance, her work is often difficult to come across as she would rarely permit its publication in anthologies. Throughout her life, Riding sought to capture truth in writing and eventually disavowed poetry due to her feeling that it prohibited her from achieving this. The Telling first appeared in 1967 in a New York magazine. It is Riding's manifesto explanation of why she renounced poetry, and articulates its author's belief in the importance of language to a pursuit of truth and sense of common humanity.
